Goanna, Surat Water Lilies, Queensland
My husband took myself and my daughter on a road trip “down the road” (while our son worked) to a couple of spots he had found while out working that he thought would interest me and my photography. We live in a rural town in Western Queensland so down the road can be an hour or more drive with nothing but grazing properties, dirt and some trees. Usually you see kangaroos lazing under trees, the occasional emu, maybe an echidna (if you’re lucky) and if you’re even luckier, you might even see a couple of wild camels (although there are some that are farmed in the area). Unfortunately, we didn’t see any of these…….NOT EVEN KANGAROOS, which is unusual!
This first spot, although at the time of day we were there we didn’t stop for photos, would be magical first thing in the morning or just as the sun was setting so is definitely a spot I will go back to with my camera.
The second spot, oh my……….water lilies all through the billabong and oh so pretty and my favourite colour – purple! So while my husband and daughter went for a walk, I got lost in my own world taking photos, looking for anything that stood out, searching for things that didn’t and the unusual - opened water lilies, half-opened water lilies, closed water lilies, different coloured dragon flies, unusual trees………….AND then high up on a branch there is a goanna well and truly camouflaged and tailless (and looking very well feed but also, at first, I thought it may not have been alive until I zoomed in and it’s eye opened!!).
What a find - it always pays to look up! You never know what you might find hiding in the branches!
