Are you are stuck in a rut and don’t know how to get motivated to take that next photo. Here are some tips that I have:-
- Take your camera with you wherever you go – I cannot tell you the number of times I wished I had taken my camera with me and spotted the perfect photo opportunity only to realised I didn’t have my camera - instant regret!
- Do a photo challenge – These are fantastic and there are so many different ones on the internet or create your own. Do it with a friend or a group of people you know, make it more fun and it will motivate you to take those daily photos.
- Choose a project – Focus on just ONE subject/topic that you’re passionate about. It could be anything- your favourite colour, your kids, your pets, sports, weather, plants, flowers – anything that makes you happy. Throw technique out the window. Taking photos of something you are passionate about will show your in the images you capture and show the feelings you felt when taking those images..
- Start your own 365 Project – Take a photo every day of whatever you like (what you’re eating, your pet, daily routine……whatever tickles your fancy). It’s a great way to keep a record of your year and an even better way to see how you have grown as a photographer!
- Do a course/learn something new – Last year I did a Night Photography Course with David Margo (@davidjmagro) and learnt so much from him which got me interested in learning more about night photography and I cannot wait to do another course with him! I am also constantly looking at YouTube videos on editing techniques and how to simplify my workflow (especially when I first started to learn to edit photos). There is always something new to learn in photography! Learn more about your camera - check out all the menus its features and experiment with those features!
- Buy/rent new gear – When I get a new lens all I want to do is use it and take heaps of photos, which motivates me to take more photos again.
- Print your photos – This one I LOVE. Seeing your images printed gives you a buzz and makes you want to take more photos! I recently had a few images printed and wanted to keep them!
- Experiment – Grab your camera and try different ideas – shoot from above, use cardboard rolls or something circular and take photos through it, water drop photos……you’re only limited by your imagination.
- Check out other photographers’ pages – I love seeing what other photographers captured and can often find inspiration from what they have taken. Keep in mind though copyright laws and don’t copy their images, just use them as ideas to get those creative juices flowing again.
- Take photos just for fun – Enjoy the process of taking the photos, don’t think about it, don’t think about the technicalities of taking a photo – just take photos for the fun of it! Remember why you started taking photos in the first place –Just get lost in the moment and bring that joy back and the motivation will come back.
- Go on holidays – Holidays are fantastic for getting that mojo back, especially if it is somewhere you’ve never been before (just don’t forget your camera). Go exploring, take tours and take a good look around. Remember, keep your eyes open as you never know what might be hiding or right in front of you!
- Join a local Photography Group – Meeting other photographers, getting together and sharing ideas is a great way of not only meeting other photographers but also bouncing ideas around, learning new skills and getting out and about and being in the moment and taking photos with others who love doing the same thing. They are also great at offering advice on your images, different things you could try or even motivating you to take your photography further.
- Create a list of places you would like to go – A bucket list of places to go, ideas of what you want to photograph while you’re there, locations you want to go to while there. Plan what you will do when you get there, times of day that would work for certain images and picture what those images might look like.
Hopefully the above helps to get your photography mojo back and taking those awesome photos you are capable of.
Happy snapping 📸
